Reglan is a metoclopramide drug manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Regan and other metoclopramide drug, as well as their generic equivalents, have been associated with different side effects, the most severe and common being Tardive Dyskinesia. Reglan is used to help reduce heartburn and acid reflux symptoms and to help with the digestive process. It has been in the market since 1996. The FDA first issued a warning that metoclopramide treatment can cause tardive dyskinesia in November 2010.

Tardive Dyskinesia is a form of dyskinesia that is difficult to treat. Tardive involuntary movements, meaning the movements have a belated or slow onset, characterize it. These movements are repetitive and they include tongue protrusion, rapid eye blinking, lip smacking, grimacing, pursing of the lips, and puckering. In some cases, there are rapid, involuntary movements of the fingers, torso, and limbs. It could also affect the patient’s legs, making it difficult for him/her to walk. The symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia are opposite those of Parkinson's disease.

You should sue because Wyeth Pharmaceuticals executives knew the Tardive Dyskinesia risk and purposefully downplayed them. Once you are diagnosed with Tardive dyskinesia, you are most probably going to have the condition for the rest of your life, even if you stop taking the drug. The compensation should be enough to cover medical costs as well as lost wages.

You are entitled to compensation for the pain and suffering (such as for suffering embarrassment after going out in public with a face that keeps on doing weird things). Once you get the disease, you will have to make lifestyle changes. The disease also means you will not be able to fit in at work. The disease will limit your movements as well as other activities. In short, the disease adversely affects your quality of life.

Other than getting compensation, Tardive Dyskinesia patients who took the drug should also sue Wyeth Pharmaceuticals because this will force the pharmaceutical company and other companies make high quality drugs and do thorough testing before releasing drugs in the market in the future. The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and these companies will only do the right thing if they start feeling the pinch. Although the condition is irreversible, you will have peace of mind knowing that those responsible have paid for their actions. If the patient is not able to file the Tardive Dyskinesia lawsuit, loved ones could file the lawsuit.
